    LEARNING LEARNING

LEARNING LEARNING

Many thanks to Paul Ginnis for contributing these 'Learning Learning' resources for publication on FRET.

Paul, an independent trainer with 16 years experience, supports schools in raising achievement by focusing on teaching and learning.

Previously a Head of Religious Education in inner Birmingham, an advisory teacher and a Staff Development Tutor, he has worked in over 350 secondary, primary and special schools in the UK and has presented courses and conferences in America, Germany, France, Australia and Dubai. Much of Paul’s time is spent in classrooms, working directly with teachers and students, devising and trying strategies to improve the quality of learning for all. His style is to combine theory and practice.

Among Paul's many publications are A Guide to Student-Centred Learning (1986, reprinted 15 times) and The Student-Centred School (1990).  He is currently working on The Teachers’ Toolkit, to be published January 2002 by Crown House.

He regularly provides training days, consultancy, runs courses, addresses conferences and leads LEA projects.

Married for the second time, Paul has three children (aged 19, 15 and 14), supports Stoke City FC (!) and is a self-confessed vinyl junkie (old records that is, not lino or plastic trousers).

Paul can be contacted at: ginnis@totalise.co.uk

Ambassadors

Ambassadors go to foreign lands on behalf of their countries. They represent and they report. All this can be recreated in the kingdom of the classroom.

PDF

Back to Back

This is an easily applied and fun activity that promotes verbal skill, listening, observation, comprehension and co-operation.  What more could you want?!

PDF

Bingo

A novel and light-hearted way to reinforce key concepts and vocabulary.

PDF

Calling Cards

Calling out is rude. In the polite social circles of your classroom, calling cards are much more civilised.

PDF

Delegation

Getting other people to do the learning for you. Now that sounds like a sensible idea.

PDF

Discussion Carousel

A device for getting everyone to take part in productive, if not circular (!) discussion.

PDF

Forum Theatre

A truly dramatic technique for exploring all kinds of interactions and events - fictional or factual - past, present or future.

PDF

Hot Seating

A non-didactic way of the teacher giving information to the class, without giving up the spotlight!

PDF

Market Place

Commerce in the classroom?  In the information trade, a little hustle and bustle is a small price to pay.

PDF

Pass the Buck

Pass the buck and let someone else do the work.  But, to mix metaphors, when the buck stops, all your chickens come home to roost.

PDF

Question Time

Curiosity might have killed the cat, but it generally keeps motivation alive.  Questioning the teacher is a particularly curious business.

PDF

Quick on the Draw

A research activity with a built in incentive for teamwork and speed.

PDF

Scrambled Groups

This noisy number gives each person in the class a chance to hear and discuss everyone else's contribution.

PDF

Spotlight

When you're caught in the spotlight, all is revealed.  This is one way for everyone to shine.

PDF

Still Image

A visual and involving way of understanding concepts.  Seeing, as the say, is believing.

PDF

Value Continuum

This rather technical sounding terms describes a strategy which encourages pupils to express their views in complete emotional comfort.
